Quickstart

Before you start#

• Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit), 4 GB RAM minimum (8 GB recommended).
• One way to pay for AI: your own OpenRouter key (free to create, you pay providers directly) or a WindOp plan with built-in credits.

1. Install WindOp

   Download the installer from the Download page and run it. WindOp is a native desktop app, so there is nothing else to set up. See Installation if Windows SmartScreen asks for confirmation.

2. Choose how the AI is paid for

   WindOp reaches 350+ models through OpenRouter. Pick one path:

   Bring your own key

   Create a key at openrouter.ai/keys (it starts with sk-or-). You pay OpenRouter directly for what you use.

   Use WindOp credits

   Sign in with a WindOp plan and skip the key entirely. Credits are used automatically. See Account & Billing.

3. Complete first-run setup

   On first launch WindOp shows a short two-step welcome:

   Make WindOp yours

   Connect an OpenRouter API key to start chatting. You can configure other providers in Settings after setup.

   • Step 1 — Connection. Paste your OpenRouter key, or sign in to use WindOp credits. Setup saves the key but does not test it, so a typo will only show up when you send a message.
   • Step 2 — Default skills. Choose which skills should be on by default. You can change this any time in SettingsSkills.

   Tip

   Not ready? Choose Set up later. Everything in setup is available afterwards in SettingsGeneral and SettingsAccount.

4. Give it a task

   Click into the chat box and describe what you want in plain language. WindOp decides which tools to use and shows every tool call in the conversation as it happens.

   Files

   “Organize my Downloads folder by file type. Show me the plan first.”

   Code

   “Find every TODO comment in this project and group them by file.”

   Research

   “Search the web for the latest Node.js security advisories and summarize them.”

   Desktop

   “Take a screenshot and tell me what is on my screen.”

   Actions that change things — deleting files, running risky commands — ask for your approval first. You control how strict that is in SettingsSecurity.

5. Learn the essentials

   A few things worth knowing on day one:

   • Press Ctrl+N for a new conversation and Ctrl+M to switch models mid-chat.
   • Press Ctrl+, to open Settings, or Ctrl+K for the command palette.
   • Press ? (outside a text field) to see the full shortcut list.
